Jennifer Finnigan, black and white profile, tools, workshop

Jennifer Finnigan is a Cardiff based designer and maker. Enjoying both the precision of woodwork and the intricacy of wirework, she combines the two in her current furniture and homewares range; Wood and Wire. Her pieces incorporate mid-century modern design principles including minimalist form and an honest expression of materials.

The inlay pattern of each piece develops uniquely, following the natural figuring of the wood grain. Each piece of wood is thoughtfully chosen and cut down to create the most dramatic inlay pattern as possible. To inlay, Jennifer hand carves along wood and then deepens with a diamond tipped rotary tool. Wire is then carefully hammered in and sanded down. The direct contrast of metal to wood created highlights the beauty of each material, the making process and the function of the pieces themselves.

Having worked within the greeting card industry for several years, Jennifer noticed a gap in the market for modern and amusing Welsh designs. Mid Mod Cards was since created; a range of Cymraeg and English language cards, with continued use of mid-century modern aesthetics as well as Wales based humour.

These are now exclusively available on Etsy and Scribbler.
